Whether spending the day on a golf course playing adaptive golf, or taking an educational tour of Ohio’s Statehouse, six high school students with disabilities enjoyed a fun-filled week at “Summer in the City” Camp July 21-25, 2008. The purpose of the day-camp was to give the students an opportunity to learn about possible career choices for people with disabilities, master a new skill, and explore their creativity through art.

The students were referred to the camp through the Franklin County Board of MRDD. The camp atmosphere offered an opportunity for the students to participate in extracurricular, educational, and personal development activities. Each day’s activities were centered on a theme. Camp began on Monday with Arts and Creativity Day. Activities included a trip to view an art show at the Columbus College of Art and Design. In the afternoon the campers spent time in UCP’s Art Bridge Studio designing a camp logo that would be screen printed onto the camp T-shirts. On Tuesday, the campers spent the day at Raymond Golf Course with the staff of Fore Hope, an organization that uses golf as an instrument to help in the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities or an inactive lifestyle.

On Wednesday the campers focused on career exploration, meeting with the staff of Careers Unlimited, UCP’s employment program, to explore their employment options after graduation. The staff also highlighted programs and services for people with disabilities that are offered through organizations like UCP. That afternoon the campers spent time in UCP’s workout facility with the Fitness Trainer learning easy and fun exercises that can be done at home to help increase physical activity.

The campers spent Thursday morning touring the Ohio Statehouse and participating in a discussion on Ohio citizenship, specifically the importance of voting and advocacy. In the afternoon, they baked and iced cookies as a volunteer project to thank UCP’s participants for sharing their space during the week. The week wrapped up with a scavenger hunt at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park in the morning and an ice cream social in the afternoon.

UCP would like to thank the Columbus Youth Foundation and the Columbus Foundation for their generous support in making “Summer in the City” Camp possible. This camp not only provided an opportunity for students with disabilities to try new experiences, but also encouraged self exploration and community integration. UCP plans to host the camp again next summer!

The cy pres gift, as it is called, is the largest known distribution of its kind.

Staff and clients from each organization were invited to attend a luncheon where they would receive a gift of at least $100,000. Dworken and Bernstein Partner Patrick Perotti administered the donations in what proved to be an exciting and emotional ceremony. United Cerebral Palsy received a total of $443,000 which was to be split among the three Ohio affiliates; UCP of Greater Cleveland, UCP of Greater Cincinnati, and UCP of Central Ohio.

Some of the ways in which UCP plans to utilize this gift include: the reinvestment of agency reserves and creating a line of credit which will help the agency pro-long its reserves; create a for-profit venture which will provide a sustainable source of funding for the agency’s programs; increase our development programming by implementing new fundraising events, as well as increasing our submission of grants for general operating monies; work to strengthen our relationship with community partners and work to form collaborations that positively benefit UCP; and embark on a Public Awareness Campaign to increase the visibility of the agency and the services provided to increase referrals, volunteers, and donor support.

UCP of Central Ohio would like to thank Grange Mutual Casualty Insurance Co. and the staff at Dworken & Bernstein Co., L.P.A. for their generosity. Ten of the benches were sold to benefit the programs and services offered by UCP of Central Ohio.

Most of the vibrant benches on display were made to look like dinosaurs, while several other benches were designed with specific themes in mind-one of the most popular being the bright pink Butterfly bench. The unique benches serve a variety of functions, from brightening up a child’s playroom to being placed in a flower garden or den.

The Create-a-Bench project is an endeavor of UCP of Central Ohio to raise money for the programs they provide to people with disabilities and aging conditions. The purpose of this project is for UCP to develop a sustainable funding stream that is not dependent upon government funding, grants, or private donations. Create-a-Bench is made possible by generous support from Craters & Freighters of Columbus. If you or someone you know would like a bench of your own, please call Jonathan Ryder for ordering information at 614-279-0109.

UCP of Central Ohio would like to thank Craters and Freighters of Columbus and Gallery 202 for making this event possible. The day was packed full of activities both indoors and outside.

In the morning, four of the volunteers soaked up the sun while planting flowers and vegetables in the green space. The other volunteers chose to show their creative side while painting wooden benches, transforming them into dinosaur benches to be displayed at the Westerville Music and Arts Festival in July. The benches will be auctioned off, raising funds for UCP of Central Ohio and the Create-a-Bench project. In the afternoon, volunteers got some quality time with UCP’s participants, hosting a Carnival with games and prizes.

“IMPACT Day is a celebration of the contributions we make year-round to our community,” said John McEwan, managing partner of Deloitte’s Cleveland office. “We hope this one-day splash draws broader attention to the fact that non-profits today need our help more than ever, and perhaps in more different ways than ever before.”

The staff and participants at UCP would like to thank the Deloitte volunteers for giving their time and energy to help enhance the lives of people with disabilities and aging conditions in Central Ohio.

You get to enjoy a game of golf on a beautiful course, while ensuring a life without limits for people with disabilities. Not only will you and your team be helping to raise money for UCP of Central Ohio, you’ll also enjoy a competitive golf game, a great lunch, buffet dinner, drinks and snacks on the course, and cocktails at the reception.

Also plan to bid on our silent auction packages for a chance to take home gifts for you, or family and friends. In the past 4 years, this event has raised more than $180,000 for UCP’s programs and services.

By taking part, you are assisting us as we continue our important mission of advancing the independence of people with disabilities, to enable their full inclusion in life and the Central Ohio community.
Why Should I Support This Golf Tournament?
As you may have been reading, it has been a challenging time for us at UCP as we are facing a 56% loss in funding from United Way as they reprioritize their giving in the community. In response to this we are working very hard to make sure that this loss in funding does not disrupt our programming.

For over 50 years, our mission has been to provide an environment where people with disabilities and aging conditions receive individualized programs and support services. Now, more than ever, UCP must rely on individual and corporate donors like you. You can make it your mission to participate in this year’s event, and encourage your friends, family and coworkers to join you.
There is no cure for cerebral palsy and other physical and mental disabilities. At the 1st Annual UCP of Central Ohio Challenger Football Competition

On Sunday, March 30th, 2008, youth with disabilities came from all over Central Ohio for a chance to play flag football with the Columbus Destroyers and cheer with the Destroyers Bombshells at the Nationwide Arena. With two children of his own, Destroyers Quarterback Matt Nagy was more than willing to get his team involved with the UCP of Central Ohio Challenger Football Competition. “The Destroyers are honored to be involved with UCP and this event. By taking part, the team is helping individuals who aren’t as fortunate. We are happy to be a part of the day, and the game,” said Nagy.

Many of the event participants started off the exciting weekend attending Saturday night’s game to watch the Columbus Destroyers take on the Orlando Predators. Before the kickoff, the group was invited to join the Bombshells in forming a Tunnel of Support to welcome the Destroyers onto the playing field.During Sunday’s UCP of Central Ohio Challenger Football Competition, each participant was paired with a Football or Cheerleader Buddy. During each 30 minute game, utilizing the rules of flag football, the Football Buddy caught the ball and handed it off to the youth who then runs/wheels, throws, catches and scores! The UCP of Central Ohio Challenger Football Competition allowed the youth to learn good sportsmanship and make new friends while transforming disabilities into abilities. Being awarded a medal by a Columbus Destroyer or a Destroyer Bombshell is a moment these youth will not soon forget.

This event would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors: Nationwide Arena, The Columbus Destroyers, WBNS-10TV, C-BUS Magazine, National City, US Bank, Donatos, Huntington Bank, and Deloitte & Touche. Over 100 volunteers from local schools, businesses, and organizations contributed their time and talents to help make this event a huge success. Event proceeds benefited UCP of Central Ohio, the Miracle League of Central Ohio, and the 2nd and 7 Foundation.

The mission of UCP of Central Ohio is to provide an environment where people with disabilities and aging conditions receive individualized programs and support services.
The Franklin County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities has a levy (Issue 29) on the March 4, 2008 ballot for the children and adults in Franklin County who have mental retardation or other developmental disabilities. This levy would replace two levies, one of which was passed in 1998 and the other in 1982. Specifically, the Board is requesting a replacement levy in the amount of 1.65 mills and an increase of 1.85 mills and if this levy is passed, the Board will allow the 2.32 mill levy to expire without renewal.
What is the Cost?
• The owner of a $100,000 house will contribute an additional $47.31 per year or less than $1.00/week.
• This 3.50 (total of 1.65 and 1.85) mill levy will replace two levies. The two levies that will be replaced currently total 3.97 voted mills (2.32 and 1.65). Even though the new voted millage will be less than the previous levies, the updated effective rate will provide some additional funds to allow for continued delivery of basic quality services to the children and adults of our community who have mental retardation or other developmental disabilities.
The Levy will Maintain Basic Services
Money raised by the levy will help maintain the basic services required by a growing number of people in Franklin County. These services include operation of:
• Early childhood classes for children ages birth to 6 years.
• Schools for children who have multiple handicaps, ages 6 to 21 years.
• Sheltered workshops providing job training and jobs for adults.
• Home-based training services for children who are medically unable to attend programs.
• Supported living and service coordination services for individuals and their families.
• Services for senior citizens who have mental retardation or other developmental disabilities.
Demand for Services Continues
• The number of individuals receiving services continues to increase at a rate of 3-5 percent per year.
• Many parents, in their 70s or 80s, are still caring for their disabled adult child at home and need our support.
• The number of children and adults receiving services has increased due to:
◊ Increased awareness on the part of doctors, who can refer children with mental retardation or other developmental disabilities at birth.
◊ Better medical technology.
◊ Increased efforts to find children and adults who will benefit from MRDD programs.
◊ Change in eligibility standards.
◊ Growth in our community.
Getting Results
• The Board provides services for children and adults, many of whom have both mental retardation and physical handicaps.
• The Board has secured more federal dollars than any other county, helping to stretch local tax dollars.
• With the help of early intervention and preschool services, 90 percent of the children leaving preschool are able to go to a regular school rather than a special school.
• The Board provides services directly and contracts with many organizations (e.g., Goodwill, Easter Seals, Children’s Hospital, Catholic Social Services, Childhood League, Jewish Center, Special Olympics, etc.) to deliver services efficiently.
• The Board has fulfilled previous commitments and has not been on the ballot since 2001.
• With passage of this levy the Board will not renew the 2.32 mill levy that will expire in 2008.
• With the help of sheltered employment and placement services, many adults with mental retardation become less dependent on tax supported services, by acquiring jobs in our community.
• The Board received the maximum 5 year accreditation from the state of Ohio, demonstrating excellence in services.
Who is The Franklin County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities?
• The Board was created by Ohio Law in 1967 to provide services to individuals with mental retardation or other developmental disabilities.
• It is composed of:
◊ Five members appointed by the County Commissioners.
◊ Two members appointed by the Probate Judge.
◊ At least three members must be parents or family members of individuals receiving or eligible for the services provided by the Board.
Franklin County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities

All projects focus on building permanent infrastructure in nonprofit organizations to help them more effectively bring individuals and communities out of poverty. When VISTA members complete their service, they leave behind lasting solutions to some of our country's toughest problems.” UCP is lucky enough to have 2 Americorps VISTA members as part of our team. You probably already know them, though you may not know they are VISTAs.

Margarette Carter works with Teresa and Mary in Human Resources and Finance. Terry Wonycott is working in the Careers Unlimited program helping to solidify sustainable employment opportunities for their participants. We value their time and efforts as they are definitely underpaid (stipend only) for the work they do. Below are their views regarding their service:

1) How did you decide to be an Americorps VISTA member?
Margarette: In meeting Teresa at a job fair, I was looking for an entry level position within Human Resources and I was willing to volunteer. Teresa scheduled a walk through interview and then Gina informed me about an opportunity to be a paid volunteer and the rest is history.
Terry: My wife is a VISTA member so I knew of the program and I decided it would be a great way to test a job field without commiting to it long term.

2) What do you like most about your service site and/or being a VISTA?
Margarette: I feel as though I work in a laid back atmosphere. I LOVE working for UCP and the experience that I have had so far have been WONDERFUL. I also like traveling to the different vista trainings.
Terry: The incentives that Vista offers like 5,000 dollars off student loans and no contest entry into government jobs.

3) What have you learned from being an Americorps member and/or from working at UCP?
Margarette: Patience, Patience and more Patience! Just enjoy EVERY experience although every experience may not be pleasant, it is preparing you to handle much greater task. It’s all part of the learning process.
Terry: I have learned a lot about employment and marketablity of programs.

4) When your one year commitment is over, what do you plan to do?
Margarette: I would like to see if I could UCP would allow me to serve another year as a LEAD Vista*. If not then I may try to serve again out of state.
Terry: Get a job or go get my master in business.

5) What advice do you have for someone interested in becoming an Americorps VISTA?
Margarette: Although there is no age limit on serving with the Americorp Vista* program I believe that it would be really great for a high school graduate who has no clue what they want in life. I believe that this program will give them direction. It’s a challenge BUT well worth the experience, time, and opportunity.
Terry: Make sure you are able to live off of the low income that is provided.

AmeriCorps membership is open to U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents age 17 and older. Members serve full or part time over a 10- to 12-month period. Upon successful completion of their service, members receive an AmeriCorps Education Award of up to $4,725 to pay for college or graduate school or to pay back qualified student loans. During their service, members receive health coverage, training, and student loan deferment. About half the members also receive a modest annual living allowance.
Members who serve part time receive a partial AmeriCorps Education Award.
