United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Central Ohio kicked off Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in March by attending the kickoff event at the Ohio Statehouse Atrium on Thursday, March 4, 2010 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Several of UCP’s participants went to the Statehouse to be a part of this important event in Columbus that highlights the many efforts throughout the state that afford opportunities for people with disabilities to be successful in their communities.

On Thursday, February 4, 2010, the Reese Adult Day Center and United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Central Ohio hosted the 9th Annual Taste of Italy event to benefit programs and This year marks the 10th anniversary of providing services for older adults with aging conditions and people with disabilities in Licking County. Special guest Mayor Bob Diebold presented a proclamation recognizing 10 years of programming and services in Newark and Licking County. All event proceeds benefited the Reese Adult Day Center, a United Way of Licking County and Licking County Senior Levy program.

UCP of Central Ohio artists showcase talents at Accessible Expressions Ohio 2010

Artists from United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Central Ohio continue to display their talents at local art shows.The artwork of four UCP participants was on display at the Accessible Expressions Ohio 2010 art exhibition and awards ceremony, held Feb. 20th at the Westerville Community Center. UCP artist Charlotte M. gained honors at the event, capturing first place in the Professional Division. Other UCP artists whose artwork was selected include Susann R., Robert, and Jim F. Sponsored by VSA Arts of Ohio, 113 pieces of art by 97 artists from across the state were accepted into this traveling exhibition, which will be divided and toured around sites throughout Ohio in 2010. Sales of artwork were encouraged at the opening and throughout the tour.

UCP of Central Ohio was awarded a $38,920 grant from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation (the Foundation). This award will fund restroom improvements that will positively impact the personal care of people with disabilities and aging conditions who use the restrooms, improve the environment by decreasing odors and bacteria in the air, and improve working conditions for the staff.

The Fresh A.I.R. Gallery in Columbus invites you to experience A Day in the Life of Charlottesville featuring original artwork by UCP of Central Ohio artist Charlotte McGraw. The exhibit will run through March 5th at 131 N. High Street in Columbus. Gallery hours are 8am-5:30pm Monday-Friday.

The Ohio Governor's Council on People with Disabilities (GCPD) is proud to announce that the 12th Annual Ohio Youth Leadership Forum (YLF) will be held in Columbus, Ohio from July 19-22, 2010 at the Embassy Suites Airport Hotel in Columbus, Ohio.

The Ohio Youth Leadership Forum empowers students with disabilities with leadership and advocacy skills. All high school juniors and seniors who have a disability are invited to apply for this exciting, interesting and empowering forum. The application deadline is February 12, 2010. Did you receive a new electronic device replacing an old one this holiday season? You can recycle it to benefit UCP! The Recycle for UCP program by BCS Recycling Specialists provides free collection boxes to affiliates and the public for electronic waste (e-waste) recycling of cell phones, PDAs, iPods, digital cameras and inkjet cartridges. For laptops, you can order a pre-paid FedEx label from www.scrapdr.com. Recycling is a wonderful way to empower UCP to further serve communities by offering a responsible way to handle e-waste.

UCP of Central Ohio plans to attend the annual Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month Kickoff event on March 4, 2010, 10 a.m. – noon in the Ohio Statehouse atrium. This high-energy event is an annual opportunity for organizations within Ohio's developmental disabilities community to raise public awareness of the many abilities that people with disabilities have. The 2009 theme, "Just Like You" continues in 2010, and focuses on peoples' similarities rather than differences, encouraging everyone to welcome people with disabilities into their communities.

UCP of Central Ohio Awarded $1,500 Grant from Greater Columbus Arts Council!

UCP of Central Ohio was awarded a $1,500 grant through the Franklin County Neighborhood Arts Program at the Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC). This award will fund the A Seat on the Wild Side project, a collaboration between UCP of Central Ohio, Worthington Christian High School, and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Free Care Consultation offered by Alzheimers Association of Central Ohio

The Alzheimer’s Association, Central Ohio Chapter is providing free one-on-one care consultation to residents in Franklin County and the surrounding area who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Professionals will be available by appointment to answer questions about the disease, assist with linkage to community resources, help create long-term plans and offer caregiver support.

UCP of Central Ohio artist Charlotte M. was recently awarded a $350.00 grant from the Ohio Arts Council (OAC) through the Individual Artist Grant Program. This grant award will assist Charlotte with taking her artistic creations to the next level. The monies will be used to purchase a home computer so that Charlotte can research ideas and print images to incorporate into her artwork.

ATZ FarmHouse Makes an Impact on UCP of Central Ohio

On Sunday, November 22, 2009, thirteen Ohio State University students from the Alpha Tau Zeta (ATZ) chapter of FarmHouse fraternity donated their time and talents to UCP of Central Ohio. The men spent the day painting space in the agency that is utilized during UCP Summer Camp. Another portion of the space is designed to be a mock hotel room, providing an area for job skills training for the Careers Unlimited program.
