Whether spending the day on a golf course playing adaptive golf, or taking an educational tour of Ohio’s Statehouse, six high school students with disabilities enjoyed a fun-filled week at “Summer in the City” Camp July 21-25, 2008. The purpose of the day-camp was to give the students an opportunity to learn about possible career choices for people with disabilities, master a new skill, and explore their creativity through art.

UCP Receives Nearly $150,000 from Unclaimed Class-Action Settlement Funds!

On July 18, 2008, UCP of Central Ohio was one of more than 30 non-profit organizations that received a portion of $14 million in unclaimed funds from a class-action settlement with Grange Mutual Casualty Insurance Co. The cy pres gift, as it is called, is the largest known distribution of its kind.

Dinosaurs Invade the Westerville Music and Arts Festival!

While strolling through the Westerville Music and Arts Festival last weekend, you might have done a double-take if you spotted a Brontosaurus standing near the pottery display. You’ve just spotted one of the benches from the Create-a-Bench project, unique and functional benches designed and painted by United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Central Ohio’s participants and staff. The benches were on display throughout the weekend and proved to be a popular resting place for both children and adults-some children were brave enough to sit on the Tyrannosaurus Rex’s lap! Festival-goers had the opportunity to bid on the benches for a chance to take one home. Ten of the benches were sold to benefit the programs and services offered by UCP of Central Ohio.

Deloitte Spends Day Volunteering at UCP for 9th Annual IMPACT DAY

On Friday, June 6, 2008, 11 Deloitte volunteers spent IMPACT DAY at UCP of Central Ohio to continue Deloitte’s 3-year tradition of providing critical work to build up the agency’s facility and grounds. The day was packed full of activities both indoors and outside.

United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Central Ohio recently hosted the 9th Annual “People of Promise” Golf Outing at The Lakes Golf and Country Club, raising nearly $40,000.00 to support UCP’s programs and services. This year’s outing was a huge success with 120 golfers and nearly 150 businesses and corporations lending their support. The support of companies like Nationwide, Able Roofing, Fifth Third Bank, AEP, and NBC4 help make this annual event one of Central Ohio’s best.

United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Central Ohio kicked off MRDD Awareness Month in March by attending the MRDD Awareness Month kickoff event at the Ohio Statehouse on Thursday, March 6, 2008 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Three UCP participants had the opportunity to be a part of this important event in Columbus that highlighted the many efforts throughout the state that afford opportunities for people with disabilities to be successful in their communities.

Registration Now Open for the 1st Annual UCP of Central Ohio Challenger Football Competition with the Columbus Destroyers at the Nationwide Arena!

United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Central Ohio is teaming up with the Columbus Destroyers to hold the 1st Annual UCP of Central Ohio Challenger Football Competition. The single-elimination competition will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 30th at the Nationwide Arena. Children and young adults with disabilities will have the opportunity to play flag football alongside the Columbus Destroyers and other Columbus business people, or attend a cheerleading clinic hosted by the Destroyers Bombshells. The event participants will also be invited to attend the Saturday, March 29th game when the Columbus Destroyers take on the Orlando Predators at 7:00 p.m. at the Nationwide Arena.

UCP of Central Ohio Named TechColumbus TopCAT Innovation Award Finalist!

United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Central Ohio was named a TechColumbus TopCAT Innovation Award finalist in the Innovation in Non-Profit Service Delivery category. UCP was recognized at the TechColumbus TopCAT Awards ceremony held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center on Thursday, January 17th, 2008.

UCP’s nomination stemmed from a server upgrade with a multi-year outsourcing agreement with The Technology Group for off-site server support. The server upgrade has allowed increased security, better backup options, improved maintenance, and free upgrades resulting in less down time. More importantly, the server upgrade allows UCP to serve more people with disabilities and aging conditions in the community. With increased efficiency, UCP has improved service provision and streamlined case management, medical, and service record-keeping processes. UCP has also developed new fundraising tactics that have helped to form new collaborations while strengthening existing relationships in the community.

The Franklin County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities has a levy (Issue 29) on the March 4, 2008 ballot for the children and adults in Franklin County who have mental retardation or other developmental disabilities. This levy would replace two levies, one of which was passed in 1998 and the other in 1982. Specifically, the Board is requesting a replacement levy in the amount of 1.65 mills and an increase of 1.85 mills and if this levy is passed, the Board will allow the 2.32 mill levy to expire without renewal.
