...Life without limits for people withdisabilities...
United Cerebral Palsy of Central Ohio is a private, non-profit agency whose mission is to provide an environment where people with disabilities and aging conditions receive individualized programs and support services.
Ohio-UCP of Central Ohio has partnered with the Arthritis Foundation to
hold exercise classes to benefit people with arthritis. The Arthritis
Foundation certified instructor, Brien McCarty, will lead the exercise
classes which are designed for people with arthritis to maintain their
fitness while reducing arthritis pain.
UCP of Central Ohio and Imagine Great Western Academy recently
completed and installed a mural at the Dowd Center library thanks to a
generous $1000.00 grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council. The
project, titled The Art of Building Character, provided a fun learning
experience for the fifth grade students, while incorporating a
mentorship opportunity for artists with disabilities. The mural’s theme
was centered on characteristics and behaviors that successful people in
history exhibited in their everyday lives. This theme is meant to
promote positive behaviors to the youth in central Ohio. Students who
attend the after-school programs at the Dowd Center took part in a
contest to name the mural. It is fitting that they named the mural
Harmony.
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This year’s
theme captures the vital role that expectations play in our successes
as individuals and as a society. We must ensure that both people with
disabilities and their employers expect that they will fully
participate in our workplaces. Such an expectation alone, however, is
not enough. They must also have opportunity. People with disabilities
need access to a full range of employment choices to maximize their
talents.
Westgate Park was the place to
be on September 15th, 2009.

Arletta Hinger has been elected to serve on UCP of Central Ohio’s Board of Directors in an effort to enhance the lives of people with disabilities. Hinger, a Contract Administrator for the Licking County Board of Developmental Disabilities, was previously a member of the Reese Adult Day Center’s Advisory Committee. Hinger joined UCP’s Board of Directors because she believes the agency is an integral part of the Developmental Disabilities system. Hinger feels that UCP’s financial and programmatic health is important to continue to provide support to people with disabilities and aging conditions in the community.
In November the Senior Citizens levy will be on the ballot. The Reese
Adult Day Center and UCP of Central Ohio ask you to support this levy
that provides care and critical services to older adults in Licking
County. Some of the services provided include home care, meals,
transportation, respite, and adult day services. The services are
provided by a wide array of organizations that are supported by the
levy including the Reese Adult Day Center.
March is Development Disabilities Awareness Month. The staff at UCP of
Central Ohio celebrated the month by highlighting our participants’
skills, abilities, and favorite things. A “Just Like You” recognition
ceremony took place on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 1:00 pm. To begin the
special event, UCP participant Charlotte M. read a poem written by
Adult Day Manager Dywan Bright. The poem, written to honor people with
disabilities, is titled “Just Like You.” A portion of the poem reads
“I’m looked at as being different by so many people. But the way I view
it, really it’s like we’re all equal. I put my thoughts and personal
feelings into all that I do. Because I’m Just Like You.”
